United Way Sponsors Food Truck
Roscommon County United Way in conjunction with the Roscommon Area Christian Ministries held a food give away September 29 at the Roscommon Area Public School Bus garage. Feeding America, a leading hunger research organization, states on their website that “1-6 children may not know where they will get their next meal”. “For the more than 12 million kids in the U.S. facing hunger, getting the energy they need to learn and grow can be a day-in, day-out challenge.”
Because there are many families in Roscommon County needing food assistance United Way was proud to sponsor a food truck from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan with the Roscommon Area Christian Ministries. The participating churches include First Congregational Church, Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Messiah Lutheran Church, Roscommon Baptist Church, St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church, St. Hubert/St. James Catholic Churches. The collaboration of the churches brings effectiveness, efficiency and avoids duplication of effort.
During this food distribution thirty-five volunteers from the Roscommon Area Christian Ministries and the Lion’s Den as well as jail inmates on work release distributed thirteen thousand seven hundred fourteen pounds of food to ninety-seven families made up of two hundred and forty-five people. United Way helps fund activities like this food distribution throughout the community. This year twenty nonprofits received funding from United Way. All funding is made possible through gifts from local businesses, corporations and individuals donated during the annual United Way Campaign.
